Domestic Trade Ministry tells traders not to hike up prices during rainy season

JOHOR BARU: The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry has reminded traders not to take advantage of the rainy season and the Covid-19 pandemic to hike up the price of goods. Its Johor director Mohd Hairul Anuar Bohro said spot checks had been conducted at 367 premises in the state, including 267 sundry shops, 85 suppliers and 15 factories from Jan 1-9. He said the checks showed that the traders had complied with pricing regulations, and there were no incidents of profiteering. “The ministry has 200 enforcement personnel in Johor who are tasked to monitor the situation and conduct spot checks whenever necessary to ensure there is sufficient supply of goods for the market.

Consumer Affairs Ministry recorded 9,099 complaints in 2020, mostly about pricing

Selangor Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs director Muhamad Zikril Azan Abdullah ( pic) said the previous high was set in 2018, with 7,728 complaints and 2015 where 6,095 complaints were made. He said that more than 25% of the complaints were from Selangor, and most of the complaints were about pricing such as no price tags; overpricing and confusing prices; followed by controlled items and online transactions. Zikril also said the Covid -19 pandemic had a direct effect on the increase in the numbers. He said there was a spike in the number of complaints in March and April 2020 when the movement control order (MCO) was enforced.
