Surge in Covid-19 cases in Winchester district (except Stanmore)

THE surge in Covid-19 in the Winchester district is continuing. Today s figure of new cases reported this evening was 90; on December 26, 104, on December 27, 57, December 28, 56 and yesterday, 84. In the last five days 15 per cent of the total number of cases since last March have been reported. Yesterday the previous four days was 12 per cent of the total. Only in Stanmore are the numbers so low that it is marked green on the Government s interactive Covid map. District cases since last March is currently 2,611, with an infection rate of 1,907 per 100,000 people as of Sunday. Today’s infection rate for Winchester was unavailable. The national infection rate is 3,713 per 100,000.

Mr Hicks comments come after the coronavirus infection rate in the county rose to 169 cases per 100,000, while deaths are now beginning to rise again. According to the latest government statistics, 36 people who had contracted the virus in Suffolk died in the week ending December 17. In the previous week, 34 deaths had been recorded in the county across all settings. Coronavirus-related deaths began rising in the county again in November, with previous months - such as September - having recorded next to zero deaths.

New Forest moving to Tier 3 coronavirus restrictions

The New Forest is moving to a higher coronavirus tier - moving to Tier 3 from Boxing Day. The infection rate in the county has shot up from 69 cases per 100,000 people to 169 in just one week with twice as many new cases as the week before. In the last week, cases in Mid Suffolk have increased by 157%, West Suffolk 150% Babergh 137% , East Suffolk 82%  and Ipswich 14%. The biggest increase in infections is among 19 to 39-year-olds.
