Cathy Cartagena is a program manager for the
All of Us Research Program at UAB, but she is never far from her initial role as a recruiter for the program.
“It has been 16 years now at UAB and everyone can tell you that I’m a natural recruiter,” she said. “Once you convince me about the program, you’ve got me.”
Cartagena recalled wearing an
All of Us jacket on a winter trip to New York. During the trip, another passenger asked her about the program.
“I gave her all the information about joining and she didn’t even live in Birmingham,” she said with a laugh. “I said, ‘You need it. You need to check on this … find a location near you. Please enroll.
The study is called
All of Us Research Program and while it has participants from all across the country, much of that research is being done right here in Tucson.
Participants give blood samples and complete surveys that have already helped researchers learn key things about COVID-19.
This research has already helped uncover new ways to treat many different diseases for people based on their genetic make-up.
As we continue to work through the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers have discovered that the virus was already in multiple states before the major U.S. outbreaks in Seattle and New York in 2020.
This had led to more questions that could provide valuable answers.
Case Comprehensive Cancer Center
Aaron Goldenberg, PhD, MA, MPH is an Associate Professor and Research Director in the Department of Bioethics & Medical Humanities at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Dr. Goldenberg is also the Co-Director of the Center for Genetic Research Ethics and Law, a NIH Center of Excellence in ELSI Research and Co-Director of the Genetic Counseling & Bioethics dual degree program.
Dr. Goldenberg received his bachelor s degree from Michigan State University; his MPH from University of Michigan and earned his PhD in Bioethics at Case Western Reserve University. Since joining the faculty at Case Western Reserve University, Dr. Goldenberg s work focuses on the ethical, legal, and social implications of advances in genomics within clinical and public health settings. His research program has been grounded by a number of major project areas, including: 1) ethical implications of expanding newborn screening programs; 2) storage and use of perina
