Michael Collins, one of the three crew members of the first manned mission to the moon, has died at the age of 90.
Known as the “the loneliest man in history”, Collins was the pilot of the Apollo 11 mission, which in 1969 put humans on the moon for the first time. Although he never became a household name like his crew mates Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, Collins’ contribution to the mission was just as important.
As his colleagues Armstrong and Aldrin descended to the surface of the moon, Collins piloted the command module Columbia, spending close to 28 hours alone in orbit.

24 The streets of Little Haiti gave him his bearings. He knew the neighborhood well enough, at a young age, to avoid the stereotypical traps that landed his father in prison and kept his old friends stuck in the slums of Miami.
“I grew up in a projects building and got food stamps. My father is still in prison, but I never use those moments in my life as excuses,” Daniel Bailey, former Soldier turned professional boxer, said with a prideful smile. “I always told myself because of my circumstances, ‘I had to work harder.’”
The hard work paid off as Bailey took one-step closer to facing top competition when he fought Luis Alvarado in a four-round bout in the Junior Lightweight category (130 pounds). A Princeton resident is part of one of two West Point teams that earned first and second place titles at the 2021 Warfighter Innovation in Science and Engineering Challenge during a live virtual event hosted by the Combat Capabilities Development Command Soldier Center on April 27.
