Great Britain’s military intelligence leaders learned from their experience in World War I that the kinds of minds capable of breaking codes are a rare commodity and are often not likely to blossom in a military atmosphere. As World War II approached, the Government Code and Cipher School (GC&CS), a name deliberately underplaying the unit’s importance, was moved out of bomb-vulnerable London.
Orange County Water District Welcomes Newly Appointed Director Nelida Mendoza
Nelida Mendoza was recently appointed to the Orange County Water District (OCWD, the District) Board of Directors by the Santa Ana City Council to represent Division 8, the city of Santa Ana. Mendoza replaces former President Vicente Sarmiento who served on OCWD’s board for six years.
“I am honored to represent the residents and businesses of Santa Ana,” said Director Mendoza. “Water sustains our communities and our economy, and I look forward to working with my colleagues to continue the important work of OCWD.”
Mendoza was elected in May 2020 to a four-year term on the Santa Ana City Council. She previously served as trustee on the Rancho Santiago Community College District and was a former Orange County Sanitation District board member. Robert L. Gates, 79, passed away Friday, Dec. 18, 2020. He was born Oct. 12, 1941, to Florence and George Gates in Moscow.
Robert served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps from 1963-66. After he left the Army, he attended college at the University of Idaho, and graduated with a degree in radio, journalism and electronics. Bob later met and married Margaret âPeggyâ Havens in 1973, then moved to Sagle, Idaho, where he worked for a radio station. In 1986, they moved their family back to Moscow, where Bob and Peggy stayed until 2018, when they moved to Liberty Lake to be near their daughter.
Bob was a hard-working, caring husband and father who loved astronomy, sci-fi, watching movies, nightly news, listen to oldies music, Elvis Presley and traveling by car. Bob is well remembered by his longtime friends, Steve Waylett, Ilda McCurry and her late husband, George McCurry.

As part of the U.S. Army’s Next Generation Squad Weapons (NGSW), which will replace both the M4 Carbine and M249 SAW, one option is a rifle that features a “bullpup” configuration from General Dynamics. This layout places the magazine in the stock behind the pistol group which reduces the length of the weapon but could require some additional training for soldiers used to the legacy systems.
