Supply squeeze hits wharves as Visy backs calls for reforms

Supply squeeze hits wharves as Visy backs calls for reforms May 24, 2021 – 12.00am Save Share Singapore | Australia’s trade-dependent companies are backing calls for a regulator to examine shipping practices as global freight bottlenecks hit imports and exports. Paper and packaging giant Visy has backed the regulatory change. In late March, a shipment of paper reels manufactured in Australian paper mills arrived in Singapore, bound for South Africa. They were supposed to have got to Durban by April 21. A month later, they are still stuck in Singapore. Stuck: Visy has been trying for weeks to get paper reels bound for Durban out of Singapore’s container port terminal.

Fight for Alaska cruising gets a boost from a surprising source: Travel Weekly

Johanna Jainchill A case is being made to revisit the 135-year-old shipping law that could be the stranglehold on Alaska cruising this summer not by citizens of the 49th state, but of the 50th. When it comes to cruising, Hawaii and Alaska appear to have very little in common. More than half of Alaska s tourist arrive via cruise ship every year, while they accounted for only 1% of all Hawaii visitor arrivals in 2018, according to the nonprofit Grassroot Institute of Hawaii. That organization, a member of the State Policy Network, an umbrella organization for a consortium of conservative and libertarian think tanks, is joining forces with organizations in Alaska to call for reform or repeal of the 1886 U.S. Passenger Vessel Services Act (PVSA).

US West Coast port congestion – a storm abating?

Image: Port of Los Angeles YouTube Lately, meteorological analogies have been applied to characterisations of the international container shipping arena. Hence, the title: “Weathering the Supply Chain Storm” for a late April webinar produced by Project44, a provider of shipment visibility solutions. Against a backdrop, as noted by Project44, of “port congestion, disruption, and a resurging global economy”, the online session included a timely look at the current state of container transportation. It was moderated by Project44’s Nick Ruggiero, with participants Gene Seroka, Executive Director at the Port of Los Angeles, who also serves as Chief Logistics Officer for the city of Los Angeles, Edward Aldridge,  who heads up Ocean Freight at mega-forwarder Agility, and Robin Jaacks, also from Project44.
