Safaricom has made a formal bid to get a licence to operate in Ethiopia one of the world s last major closed telecoms markets, the company announced on Monday.
In a notice to shareholders, the telco said it is submitting its proposal through a consortium it is leading with its parent firms Vodafone and Vodacom, British development finance agency CDC Group and Japan s Sumitomo Corporation.

Business Daily earlier that the Horn of Africa nation would award two telecoms licences to multinational mobile companies next month after pushing forward the deadline in response to requests for extension from interested bidders.

Reuters -The United States said Thursday it would boost public climate finance to help poor countries reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change, doubling funding by 2024 from high average levels hit during the Obama administration.
The White House said it was embracing “ambitious but attainable goals” for international aid to developing countries, given the urgency of climate change and to compensate for a sharp drop in U.S. funding during the Trump administration.
The White House said that by 2024 it would triple financing of climate adaptation, which focuses on adjustments to current or expected climate change. It said it would work with Congress to enact needed legislation.

ASX-listed battery minerals play Jervois Mining has gone straight to the top in its search for cash to bring its American cobalt mine online.
Jervois Mining wants funding for its Idaho cobalt project locked in by the end of this half.

Sources told this column Jervois was in advanced discussions with a bunch of US government departments, to help it raise a portion of the US$78.4 million ($101 million) it needs to take its so-called “Idaho Cobalt Operations” to production.
The $361 million company wholly owns the cobalt-copper-gold deposit at Idaho, and has everything in place – bar the final funding package – to get the mine up and running.
