Then he saw it, the top of the tree, and measured its height with a small instrument he raised to his eye. He would combine this measurement with others to calculate the mass of the tree, a monolithic white pine in western Massachusetts. Once he found the mass, he could approximate how much carbon it contained, carbon the tree had been pulling out of the atmosphere, in the form of carbon dioxide, for well over 100 years.
Woman Goes Missing While on Hike in Yosemite National Park

Investigators are looking for a woman who went missing while on a hike in the Yosemite National Park in California.
A statement on the national park s Facebook page over the weekend said that Alice Yu Xie has been missing since she went on a day hike to the Upper Yosemite Fall overlook on 15 or 16 January last week.
Xie is described as a 41-year-old Asian female, who is less than 5 feet tall, less than 100 pounds, and has neck-length black hair.

Penn State graduate wins dissertation award for work on managing national parks

Will Rice, assistant professor of society & conservation at the University of Montana and former Penn State graduate student, recently received the Best Dissertation Award from the American Academy for Park & Recreation Administration for his thesis, “Three Measures of Recreational Ecosystem Services in Protected Areas: Studies from U.S. National Parks.”
“I am incredibly humbled to receive this award from the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration, said Rice. It is an extraordinary honor to be in the company of those researchers who have previously received it.”
