The country continued to wrestle with a coronavirus surge that quickened its pace in April. Though modest compared to other nations, the increase in Japan s case numbers comes three months ahead of the scheduled Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

TOKYO – The spring coronavirus surge continued Monday in Japan’s two largest cities, where emergency restrictions dampened the traditional weeklong vacation period for many Japanese. In Osaka prefecture, Gov. Hirofumi Yoshimura called on people to stay home during Golden Week, the period ending Wednesday, and cited overburdened medical facilities due to record-breaking new case numbers, public broadcaster NHK reported.

TOKYO – U.S. military travelers returning to Japan should avoid downloading COVID-19 tracking applications or signing pledges to follow tracking procedures, according to a policy update Friday by Yokota Air Base in western Tokyo. But don’t pick that hill to die on, the senior enlisted leader for U.S. Forces Japan said recently. If airport authorities insist that returning travelers download apps and sign a pledge, do so rather than spend time arguing the case.
