Arrest made for 2014 hit and run in Wilmington, suspect had fled to Mexico

WILMINGTON –– The U.S. Marshals Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force has made an arrest for a 2014 hit and run that killed the victim. Edwin Romero, 35, was taken into custody Thursday in Wilmington, according to a news release from the Wilmington Police Department. Police reported Romero fled to Mexico after the incident and later came back to Wilmington. Romero is currently being held on a $10,000 secured bond. The Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force is made up of members from the U.S. Marshals Service, WPD, New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, state Department of Public Safety Special Operations and the Leland Police Department.

Onslow fugitive on the run for 11 days arrested in Maryland, awaiting extradition

An Onslow man, who fled the superior courthouse after the jury reached their verdict in his trial, was arrested in Maryland early Tuesday morning and is awaiting extradition back to the county.  In early April, Derek Brandon Stokes , 34, trial was held in Onslow County Superior Court. Stokes, who was not in custody and out on bond pending his trial, was waiting in the hallway of the courthouse for the jury to return its verdict in his trial. Officials reported on April 9 when Stokes was informed the jury had reached a verdict, he ran out of the courthouse and fled the area. In his absence, the jury’s verdict was announced, finding Stokes guilty of all counts including 3 counts of disclosure of private images, 3 counts of disseminating obscenity, and 3 counts of being a habitual felon with sentencing pending further court action.
