California governor and unions clash over school openings

An effort to reopen California schools is foundering, stoking frustrations across America’s most populous state from parents eager to get their children back in classrooms and a governor who wants them there.
Parents and behavioral experts say many schoolchildren are feeling helpless or depressed and need a classroom setting to improve their mental health. An exasperated Gov. Gavin Newsom told school officials last week to “pack it up” if they fail to resume in-person classes soon.
Teacher unions say they won’t send their members into an unsafe environment. They want all teachers vaccinated before returning to the classroom.
PALIKIR, Pohnpei (FSM Information Services) â On Jan. 29, 2021, the World Health Organization reported that the Federated States of Micronesia is once again Covid-19 free.
As the only confirmed case in the FSM, discovered through a PCR test on Jan. 7, 2021 was deemed to be negative and historical after subsequent antibody and antigen tests, the FSM has once again joined the ranks of countries without any cases of Covid-19.
âThis is great news for the people and government of the FSM,â FSM President David Panuelo said in a statement. âIt is a testament to the continued dedication of our national and state medical teams, who have been collaborating diligently, and in partnership with our friends and allies at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention and the World Health Organization. While the governmentâs top priority at this moment is the implementation of the Covid-19 vaccination program, it is worth taking a moment to thank the collective efforts
PALIKIR, Pohnpei (FSM Information Services) â On Jan. 19, 2021, the Covid-19 Task Force of the Federated States of Micronesia met to discuss a range of issues, such as the current status of the confirmed case of Covid-19 onboard the MV Chief Mailo, and the status of the FSMâs Covid-19 vaccination distribution.

In the meeting, Dr. Eliaser Johnson â the FSMâs epidemiologist â described the Jan.18, 2021 Covid-19 test results for the crew of the MV Chief Mailo, wherein all crewmembers were again found to be negative except for the positive case identified on Jan. 7, 2021. It is the opinion of the Covid-19 Task Force, to be confirmed in a subsequent antigen test on Jan. 22, 2021, that the individual isolated onboard the MV Chief Mailo with Covid-19 has a âhistorical case,â i.e. that he is not presently sick and is not infectious.
