The Epilepsy Foundation today announced the introduction of Brynleigh’s Act (SB 0225 and HB 0370) in the Maryland legislature. This bill ensures that all school personnel will be trained to recognize and respond appropriately to students experiencing seizures. Five states Kentucky, Indiana, Texas, New Jersey, and Illinois have successfully passed Seizure Safe School legislation, while several other states have introduced similar bills in the current session. The bill, named after 6-year-old Brynleigh Shillinger, was originally introduced during the 2020 state legislative session. Hearings were held, but the bill subsequently stalled due to the ongoing pandemic. The bill will be heard by both the House Ways & Means Committee and Senate Education, Health, and Environmental Affairs Committee on January 20.
RICHMOND Gov. Ralph S. Northam says Virginia can be faster at administering COVID-19 vaccines and it will.
On Wednesday, Northam set a goal of 25,000 shots administered per week that he wants to be reached as soon as possible. Right now, Virginia s 23% vaccination rate is fifth-worst in the nation, according to numbers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, trailing Kansas, Georgia, Arizona and Louisiana.

Authorities arrested Thomas Lee Simmons, a 37-year-old resident of Winter Haven, Florida, on Thursday for allegedly imitating a police officer and sexually assaulting a man he had met through an online dating website.
In an affidavit, the alleged survivor said that he had started talking with Simmons online before the two eventually arranged a meeting at the Stay Plus Inn in Haines City, Florida, a city about 40 miles southwest of Orlando.
When Simmons entered the hotel room, he pulled out a knife attached to his belt, the affidavit states. Simmons reportedly claimed to be a police officer with the department s narcotics unit and told the man that other officers were standing just outside the hotel room.
