Kiefling, 82, was honored for fishery work

Longtime Jackson resident John Kiefling died Jan. 10 at home in Jackson with his wife, Loyola, by his side. His family provided the following. John William Kiefling was born Dec. 31, 1938, in Sheridan. John, an only child, enjoyed his childhood participating in many sports and activities with his good buddies. He especially enjoyed hanging out with the cowboy wranglers on the Kendrick Cattle Ranch in northern Wyoming when he was younger. His father, George Kiefling, an engineer for the Burlington Northern Railroad, and mother, Louise Kiefling, a homemaker, predeceased him and always supported his endeavors. John graduated from Sheridan High School in May 1956. While in high school he so wanted to play football for the Sheridan Broncs but was deemed too small. Not being able to join the football team, he went on to be the high school yearbook photographer. This instilled his lifelong love of photography.

ADVERTISEMENT The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources said Tyler Grimshaw drew attention online in June when the then-10-year-old reeled in a 41-pound trout without any assistance at Flaming Gorge. Grimshaw, now 11, bested his own catch this month by reeling in a 48-pound trout in the same area. Both fish were released back into the lake. Way to go, Tyler, the division tweeted. The Utah state record for lake trout stands at 53 pounds, 15 ounces. The record was set by Chance Scott at the Flaming Gorge Reservoir, the same place Grimshaw caught both of his fish.

7 ice fishing tournaments, events to check out this winter © Provided by KUTV Salt Lake City The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and Utah State Parks are sponsoring or hosting several ice fishing tournaments from January to March around the state.  A valid Utah fishing license is required for anyone over 12 years old to fish in any of the events. Anyone participating should be familiar with the ice safety recommendations on the Utah State Parks website. Participants must adhere to COVID-19 social distancing recommendations, including maintaining 6 feet from other participants not in their group and should wear a mask if social distancing can’t be maintained, the division stated in a press release.
