Richest Woman In The World Gifts $25M To HBCU Tis the season for giving. MacKenzie Scott, a novelist and philanthropist, has donated $25M to Mississippi’s Alcorn State University. This is the largest single donation that the HBCU has received in the school’s 149-year history. Scott was once married to Amazon’s founder, Jeff Bezos. “This gift is truly transformational and we are humbled by Ms. Scott’s generosity,” said Felecia M. Nave, the President of Alcorn. “It will more than double the size of our endowment. The gift will allow the University to enhance its academic offerings and make much-needed investments to continue Alcorn’s mission as the nation’s first public, historically black, land-grant university.”

Among the beneficiaries are Prairie View A&M University, an HBCU in Texas, which described Scott’s $50 million gift as the largest ever gift in the college’s history. Other HBCUs reported receiving record-breaking gifts from Scott in the tens of millions: Morgan State University, in Baltimore, reported a gift of $40 million; Winston-Salem State University, in North Carolina, reported a gift of $30 million; and Delaware State University and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore reported gifts of $20 million each.

Three historically black North Carolina colleges have received historic financial gifts from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott.  Scott is the former wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.  She gave Winston-Salem State University a record $30 million as part of more than $4.15 billion in donations to 384 organizations in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.  She donated $45 million to North Carolina A&T State University and $15 million to Elizabeth City State University.
