All key COVID-19 metrics begin to trend in positive direction

The four key COVID-19 metrics moved in the same downward directions in Forsyth County and North Carolina. The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services reported Sunday an additional 48 deaths in the state, as well as none in Forsyth County. DHHS lists COVID-19 cases and deaths on the day they are confirmed by medical providers and public health officials, so individuals may have been infected or died days before their cases are counted. It was the lowest statewide daily death count since 35 on Jan. 26. Still, the statewide death total has hit at least 109 on eight of the past 11 days. The record daily high for the pandemic is 142 reported on Jan. 10.

Trial set for lawsuit over Winston-Salem inmate s death at the Forsyth County Jail

Forsyth County Jail s medical provider is scheduled to stand trial in April 2023 over allegations that staff repeatedly ignored a Winston-Salem man s asthma, leading to his death more than three years ago.  Deshawn Lamont Coley, 39, was one of two Winston-Salem men who died at the Forsyth County Jail in May 2017. Coley died in the early morning hours of May 2, 2017, less than a month after he came into the jail to serve a six-month sentence for driving while impaired. An autopsy said he died as a result of complications from asthma. On May 26, 2017, another man, Stephen Antwan Patterson, 40, died at the jail.

Man was shot at least 16 times in deadly attack at Winston-Salem city building, autopsy says

Cobb was shot and killed Dec. 20 by a coworker at the city s public works building at 2000 Lowery St. The shooter, Steven Dewayne Haizlip, 61, went into the building and shot Cobb multiple times, Winston-Salem police said at the time. Haizlip then turn his gun on police officers before they shot and killed him, police said. Haizlip came to work with two handguns and the intentions of killing his co-worker, police said. Video footage showed that a fight between Cobb and Haizlip began in a break room, the autopsy said. Cobb was initially shot and ran into an adjacent room, where he fell and was shot several more times.
