The Escambia Children s Trust could focus on three umbrella areas of need in its first year of collecting taxes what it calls ready families, ready youth and ready babies.
The trust s needs assessment subcommittee narrowed down the needs to those three buckets before recommending that the full trust publish them for community feedback. The subcommittee chose those needs during its first meeting Monday after gathering data from various service providers. It seems like we have a pretty consistent message of three big areas, said Escambia County School District Superintendent Tim Smith, who is also a member of the trust. It seems also there have been a lot of needs assessments that they ve conducted and that we have the information, I would say, at least for the time being. Would it be an idea worth pursuing to have something go out on a public forum . where we seek affirmation of these three buckets from the public?

Even growing up just seven blocks from Pensacola High School, David Williams never thought he d one day be the principal.
Instead, like most kids who loved sports, Williams thought he would play forever and even make it in the NBA. That was a dream that was almost realized when he was drafted by the Phoenix Suns organization in 1981.
But a knee injury put a stop to his athletic career that preseason and sent him down a path that would eventually lead to a 35-year career at his alma mater Pensacola High School, which included roles in teaching, coaching and administration. Williams plans to retire as principal at the end of this school year.
