Findings from Imperial College London and Ipsos MORI show infections have halved since the last REACT-1 study in March, with only 1 in 1,000 people infected.
Data suggest the vaccination rollout continues to impact positively on prevalence, but new variants remain a threat.
Findings from the eleventh report of REACT-1, one of the country’s largest studies into COVID-19 infections in England, have been published today (Thursday 13 May) by Imperial College London and Ipsos MORI.
Over 127,000 volunteers were tested with PCR tests in England between 15 April and 3 May to examine the levels of coronavirus (COVID-19) infection in the general population. The latest data show infections in England have halved since the last REACT-1 report published on 8 April, where testing took place between 11 and 30 March.
The involvement of bereaved families will be “absolutely key” to the success of the independent inquiry into the Government’s handling of the pandemic, a campaigner has said.
Boris Johnson revealed on Wednesday that the inquiry would commence in spring next year and would put “the state’s actions under a microscope”.
Rivika Gottlieb, whose father Michael died in the first wave of the pandemic, has been among those calling for an inquiry since last year.
Speaking in front of the National Coronavirus Memorial in London, Ms Gottlieb told the PA news agency: “We’ve been campaigning since last May for a review.

Purpose: There is no universal consensus on second-line agents for the treatment of moderate/severe to sight-threatening thyroid eye disease (TED) to maintain remission after first-line intravenous methylprednisolone (IVMP). This study investigates the efficacy and safety of mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) in TED patients in a real-world setting and over a longer period than previous randomized controlled trials.
EMBARGOED TO 0001 MONDAY NOVEMBER 23 File photo dated 03/10/14 of a hospital ward. More than £10 billion in extra NHS funding is needed just to tackle the growing backlog in care caused by the pandemic, according to the British Medical Association. Staff at the Lancashire and South Cumbria Trust missed more days of work because of coronavirus last year than almost anywhere else in the country, figures reveal. The British Medical Association say the figures – which show millions of days were lost nationally – demonstrate how the pandemic has affected a health service that was woefully short on staff before it even began. NHS Digital data shows the equivalent of 127,178 full-time staff days were lost due to sickness at Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust between March and December.
