It is still a shock to see the Second World War in colour. The past feels somehow more contained when seen in black and white, as it is in most of the surviving photography from that awful conflict. Most, but not all.

The Imperial War Museum in London will open new galleries in the autumn documenting the Second World War and the Holocaust.
The £30.7 million project will open on October 2021 with the director-general of the Imperial War Museums (IWM) describing it as “almost seven years in the making”.
With more than 1,500 items, and personal stories from more than 80 countries, the Second World War galleries will show the reach of the global conflict.
In the Holocaust galleries, a section of concentration camp barracks will go on public display for first time in the UK.
Britain standing alone in WW2 is a myth , Imperial War Museum gallery will explain
A new Second World War and Holocaust Gallery will explore the international support Britain could call on
The Spitfire ad the Battle of Britain are symbolic of Britain s fight against Nazi Germany
The Imperial War Museum will dispel the myth that Britain stood alone against the Nazis in the Second World War and emphasise the contribution of troops from the Empire in a new £30 million gallery.
When France fell in 1940, it is often claimed that Britain was alone in opposing the Axis before the Soviet Union was invaded in 1941, and the United States entered the war later that year.
Why did you choose construction as a career?
I have always had an interest in buildings, architecture and the great feats of engineering, so the progression into construction was the natural career for me.
What has been your biggest career challenge to date?
Being involved in setting up a vertically integrated volumetric offsite business from a standing start. My fellow directors and I came from a consultancy background and haven’t come through the more traditional route of starting a main contracting business, but I think this has given Reds10 an advantage.
Michael Ruddick is a director at Reds10
