These urbanized bears, because of their intelligence, they ve learned to thrive in and amongst human habitation, and in mountain towns that have an urban, wildland interface, it s the perfect situation for them, he said. Sielsch estimates that about 50 black bears live full-time within the city limits of South Lake Tahoe. He also says a recent survey showed around 500 black bears are living within the Tahoe basin on the California side alone. He and others who work regularly with the bear population say much of the problem stems from access to human food.
