Lake District Wildlife Park animals enjoy taking a dip

Cumbria Zoo s Brian the Lar gibbon celebrates a special birthday in May

The month of May is always a special one at the Lake District Wildlife Park. Not only has spring sprung with the fields a lush green, blossom on the trees, and lambs bounding around; it is also the month that we celebrate a very important birthday… This year we are celebrating Brian the Lar gibbon’s 58th birthday! At this grand age, he is thought to be one of the oldest Lar gibbons in Europe. The average life span for a gibbon in captivity is 44 years old and he has well surpassed that. Brian arrived at the Lake District Wildlife Park in 2000 with his partner Sooty where they have been resident for the last for 21 years. The precise date that Brian was born is unknown, but his zoological records from London Zoo date back to the spring of 1963.

Cockermouth mums take their toddlers out on 100-mile walk for charity

Cockermouth mums have been taking their little ones out for a 100 mile toddling journey to fundraise for three charities of their choice. The group of 15 women decided to carry out the challenge at the beginning of last lockdown, noticing that the Lake District Wildlife Park was struggling due to the pandemic. The park was a regular meet-up place for the mums and they were sad to see it closed. Laura Roberts, one of the super mums, said: We were devastated that it wasn t allowed to reopen. We were looking forward to showing our children the animals and having lovely days out. So we all decided to take part in a challenge to help raise funds by getting out and about to show our support.
