PITTSFIELD, Mass. The Pittsfield School Committee interviewed four finalists on Monday and Tuesday evenings in the search for the district s new superintendent. Each of the applicants has a history of more than 24 years in education and evinced a desire to embrace the city s diverse range of youth and young adults. The committee will deliberate on the appointment of the next superintendent at its regular meeting Wednesday, April 14. Former Superintendent Jason McCandless left last August for the Mount Greylock Regional School District, and former Deputy Superintendent Joseph Curtis was selected as interim superintendent. A 23-member Superintendent Search Committee was formed in November 2020 and had its first meeting in December with the hope to have a new superintendent by July 1, 2021.
PITTSFIELD â During the thick of a coronavirus pandemic that has roiled public school education everywhere, school officials here are facing a high-stakes decision â who to hire as the next superintendent of Pittsfield Public Schools.
That decision is expected to come Wednesday, when the seven-member Pittsfield School Committee casts its vote from a field of four finalist candidates, according to Chairperson Katherine Yon.
âWe need someone on board who can lead us through the pandemic, who understands the system well enough to be able to accommodate for all the changes that we have to make to make sure everybody stays safe and healthy while learning in the best way possible,â Yon told The Eagle.
Mount Greylock Superintendent Jason McCandless and Business Administrator Joe Bergeron on Wednesday presented the regional district s $25.6 million fiscal 2022 spending plan to the town body for review. Although the budget includes an approximate 4.6 percent increase in the operating budget for the PreK-12 district, the district is seeking increases of just 1.9 percent and 2.0 percent in the assessments to member towns Williamstown and Lanesborough, respectively. The rest of the increase is being covered by grants, including pandemic-relief grants, and drawdowns on the district s three reserve accounts: School Choice, tuition and excess and deficiency. Finance Committee member Melissa Cragg spent several minutes questioning Bergeron about the long-term implications for local property taxpayers of the programmatic changes in the FY22 budget.
