COVID-19 in Iowa: Not all police, nursing home staff rushing for vaccine

Des Moines Register Although demand for the COVID-19 vaccine continues to far outstrip the supply in Iowa, not everyone who is eligible for the coveted shot is eager to take it. About 40% of Des Moines police officers have not indicated they want the vaccine, spokesperson Sgt. Paul Parizek said in an email to the Des Moines Register last week. About half of Iowa’s prison workers plan to refuse it, according to a report by the Iowa Department of Corrections director. A national survey of nursing home staff showed fewer than 40% took a first dose of vaccine when offered; the estimate for Iowa workers taking it is 40% to 59%.

A partnership with the United Way of Central Alabama will allow the agency to provide as many as 1,000 shots a day beginning this week to veterans who are at least 65 years old, the VA said. That’s up from the current daily total of 300 people. The change comes because the VA’s vaccine clinic is moving into a United Way building in downtown Birmingham. Chief executive Stacy Vasquez said the system will schedule as many veterans as it can for shots, but obtaining additional vaccine is key. “Right now, I have enough vaccine to take care of 5,000 people next week. But then after that, unless I get another shipment, I don’t know,” Vasquez told WBRC-TV last week. The VA’s vacc
