Johnson County COVID-19 update: 65 coronavirus cases reported Wednesday

At 10 a.m. Wednesday, Iowa reported another 2,785 cases of COVID-19 and 65 additional COVID-19-related deaths since the state s tally at 10 a.m. Monday, according to Coronavirus.Iowa.gov. Officials report a total of 4,060 people with COVID-19 have died from the disease across the state, including 47 in Johnson County. The first death here was reported April 4. A total of 1,375,680 Iowans have been tested for the SARS-CoV-2 novel coronavirus, which causes the disease, including 65,885 in Johnson County. A total of 289,464 have tested positive in Iowa. The state has reported a total of 11,419 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Johnson County, an increase of 65 since 10 a.m. Tuesday.

At 10 a.m. Friday, the state reported 109 people with the virus were being hospitalized in the state s fifth RMCC, which includes Clinton, Des Moines, Henry, Iowa, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Keokuk, Lee, Muscatine, Scott, Van Buren, Wapello and Washington counties, as well as 34 patients in the region s intensive care units. The region last peaked at 371 hospitalized patients on Nov. 18 and 19, and 102 in its ICUs on Nov. 19. Officials also reported 575 COVID-19 patients hospitalized across the state Friday morning, including 117 in ICUs; the previous highs were 1,527, reported Nov. 18, and 288, reported Nov. 17. Forty-two of Iowa s 99 counties were reporting 14-day positivity rate averages of at or higher than 15% Friday morning. Fifteen counties  including Johnson, albeit barely were reporting 14-day positivity rate averages of less than 10%.

Iowa prison inmate from Black Hawk County dies from COVID-19

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KWWL) The Iowa Department of Corrections reports a prisoner from the Iowa State Penitentiary has died from COVID-19 complications, the 13th inmate across the state to die from the virus. Dale Dean Viers, 58, died at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Sunday morning due to COVID-19 complications and other preexisting conditions. He was being held at the prison in Fort Madison and had been taken to the hospital several days ago for more advanced care as his condition began to worsen. Viers had been serving a life sentence for 1st Degree Kidnapping out of Black Hawk County. His sentence began on March 30, 1995.
