Johnson County COVID update: 76 more cases confirmed Christmas weekend

At 2 p.m. Sunday, Iowa reported another 2,532 cases of COVID-19 and six additional COVID-19-related deaths since the state s tally at 10 a.m. Thursday, according to Coronavirus.Iowa.gov. Officials report a total of 3,745 people with COVID-19 have died from the disease across the state, including 47 in Johnson County. The first death here was reported April 4. A total of 1,341,596 Iowans have been tested for the SARS-CoV-2 novel coronavirus, which causes the disease, including 64,216 in Johnson County. A total of 274,976 have tested positive in Iowa. The state has reported a total of 10,829 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Johnson County, an increase of 76 since 10 a.m. Thursday.

How many people are in hospitals? At 10 a.m. Tuesday, the state reported 122 people with the virus were being hospitalized in the state s fifth RMCC, which includes Clinton, Des Moines, Henry, Iowa, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Keokuk, Lee, Muscatine, Scott, Van Buren, Wapello and Washington counties, as well as 32 patients in the region s intensive care units. The region last peaked at 371 hospitalized patients on Nov. 18 and 19, and 102 in its ICUs on Nov. 19. Officials also reported 651 COVID-19 patients hospitalized across the state Tuesday morning, including 140 in ICUs; the previous highs were 1,527, reported Nov. 18, and 288, reported Nov. 17. Thirty-two of Iowa s 99 counties were reporting 14-day positivity rate averages of at or higher than 15% Tuesday morning. Sixteen counties  including Johnson were reporting 14-day positivity rate averages of less than 10%.

A 58-year-old man, Dale Viers, was serving time at the Iowa State Penitentiary, and had been in prison for 25 years on a 1st Degree Kidnapping conviction. He died early Sunday morning from COVID-19 and other preexisting conditions at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. The Iowa prison system experienced a systemwide outbreak of the virus in November, which coincided with a surge in general across the state. Positive cases at state prisons have since subsided, with 91 reported early Tuesday morning. Two staff members at Iowa prisons have died from COVID-19, one each at the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women and the Clarinda Correctional Facility.
