Iowa lawmakers join environmentalists in calling for halt to CAFOs

Des Moines Register Citing what it says is mounting public support, a group of environmental, legislative and farm leaders called Tuesday for a moratorium on new confined animal feeding operations, saying the large-scale livestock-raising facilities pollute Iowa s water and air and harm rural communities.  Rep. Art Staed of Cedar Rapids and Sen. Pam Jochum of Dubuque, both Democrats, introduced complementary bills that call for Iowa to halt construction of new CAFOs. It s the fourth year groups have proposed a moratorium. So far, efforts have been unsuccessful, given opposition from Republicans who control the Iowa House, Senate and governor s office, the groups said.

Groups make another push to end factory farms

Radio Iowa You are here: Home Groups make another push to end ‘factory farms’ Bills calling for a statewide moratorium on new factory farms are not expected to gain much traction in the Iowa legislature this session. Several groups are working to stop the development of concentrated animal feeding operations, or CAFOs, which they say pollute the air and water, impact the quality of life, and devalue nearby land. Drew Mogler, a spokesman for the Iowa Pork Producers Association, says if the legislation is approved, it would be a disaster for the state of Iowa and for the pork industry.
