Picture: Jim Coughlan. A YOUNG Cork woman whose father was shot dead is to seek a meeting with the Minister for Justice to call for rights for victims’s families. Deirdre Coakley from Macroom is planning to write to the Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee, to request a meeting with her. It follows a letter she wrote to the minister last October, just days after a court hearing was told that the man who was accused of shooting her father Derry near Macroom town in October 2018 had died before entering a plea in the case.

We ll need to see the detail of what the Minister s proposed - it s very positive that the Minister s bringing forward primary legislation in this area. It affords the opportunity for the Oireachtas and for the wider public to consider this in detail. Of course if safeguards are in place that will address some of the concerns. But the real issue that we have with body-worn cameras specifically is that the move to introduce them, particularly coming in the United States, was based on the belief they would improve police behaviour, reduce crime and give an accurate record of what happens in policing incidents.

Garda body cams - the ICCL s concerns

Cabinet is expected to consider the move tomorrow with the devices potentially coming on stream next year.  It is believed that cameras will only be activated and used by Gardaí in specific circumstances and situations. Liam Herrick is the executive director of the Irish Council for Civil Liberties, he outline the ICCL s concerns on the issue.

The court decided that the NSA s surveillance practices meant that the personal data of EU citizens was not protected to the degree required by the GDPR when it was sent to the US. This was the second time that such an agreement had been struck down: before, there was Safe Harbor, which failed for similar reasons. The absence of a simple procedure for sending EU personal data to the US is bad news for companies that need to do this on a regular basis. No wonder, then, that the US and EU are trying to come up with a new legal framework to allow it, as this CNBC story notes:

Leitrim TD says Coroners’ system requires urgent reform Reporter:   ); Sinn Féin spokesperson on Justice and Sligo/Leitrim TD, Martin Kenny, has welcomed the publication of a ‘damning’ report into the coroners’ system which makes 52 recommendations for reform of a system not fit for purpose. Speaking following the launch of the study ‘Death Investigation, Coroners’ Inquests and the Rights of the Bereaved’ by the Irish Council for Civil Liberties, Teachta Kenny said: “This report is a damning indictment of the coronial system. It is clear that the system is not fit for purpose and is in need of urgent reform. Bereaved families deserve appropriate support and access to justice, instead this report warns that their trauma is being compounded by this inadequate system.
