Almost half of Latvian population suffers daily physical pain

(Latvian Public Broadcasting) According to the European Health Interview Survey (EHIS) carried out by the Central Statistical Bureau in Latvia, 46.9 % of the Latvian population aged over 15 years experiences physical pain on a daily basis. The figure is which is 2.6 percentage points higher than five years ago. Almost a third (32.3 %) of the population feel very mild or mild pain, but 14.6 % suffer moderate to very severe pain. Even though pain and its intensity is a subjective assessment, it significantly differs between males and females. 52.3 % of females and 40.4 % males experience physical pain (49.3 % and 38.1 % – in 2014). Mainly the population of Latvia experiences very mild or mild pain – it is indicated by almost every third male (30 %) and female (34.3 %). 11.3 % of females experience moderate pain, but 6.7 % suffer severe or very severe pain (males – 6.8 % and 3.6 %, respectively).

(Latvian Public Broadcasting) Data of European Health Interview Survey (EHIS) published by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) April 16 show that medicines not prescribed by a doctor are used by 50% of the population of Latvia aged 15 and up. Prescribed medicines were used by 46,2 % of the population.   Over the past five years, the use of non-prescribed medicines has fallen by 4 percentage points, while the use of prescribed medicines has risen by 4.8 percentage points. Habits of using medicines differ notably between males and females.  Non-prescribed medicines are used by 58.9 % of females and 39.1 % of males (62.7 % and 43 % in 2014), while prescribed medicines are used by 54 % of females and 36.6 % of males (49.9 % and 30.7 % - in 2014).

About a third of Latvians eat fruit and vegetables daily According to a European Health Interview Survey (EHIS), published by Central Statistical Bureau, around one in three Latvians consume fruit and vegetables daily. Specifically, 35.3% of Latvian population aged 15 and over consumed fruit at least once a day, while vegetables and salads (excluding potatoes) stood at 39.4 %. In the last five years these indicators have decreased by 4.5 and 3.2 percentage points, respectively. Women eat more fruit and vegetables than men Fruit and vegetable eating habits are different between men and women. In 2019, similarly to 2014, the trend was that women consumed more fruit and vegetables: 41.3 % of women consumed fruit at least once a day, with vegetables and salads (except potatoes) at 43.6 % of women. Mostly women aged 55 to 64 (47.4 %) consumed fruit on a daily basis. Men ate more vegetables than fruit - 27.8 % of men ate fruit every day, while 34.2 % of men ate vegetables.
