UN Women’s Rights Committee to review Denmark online GENEVA (17 February 2021) The UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) will review the situation of women’s rights and gender equality in Denmark, including the self-governing territories of Greenland and the Faroe Islands, from 22 February to 24 February. In a public dialogue held online and webcast over the three days, CEDAW, which has received a country report from Denmark as well as submissions from non-governmental organizations and other stakeholders, will discuss a range of issues with the State delegation. Among possible issues, the Committee will review the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on women’s rights and gender equality in Denmark and will evaluate the State party’s COVID recovery strategies as a catalyst for sustainable change and gender equality.

Italy failed to rescue more than 200 migrants, UN Committee finds GENEVA (27 January 2021) –Italy failed to protect the right to life of more than 200 migrants who were on board a vessel that sank in the Mediterranean Sea in 2013, the UN Human Rights Committee has found. In a decision published today, the Human Rights Committee said that Italy had failed to respond promptly to various distress calls from the sinking boat, which was carrying more than 400 adults and children. The State party also failed to explain the delay in dispatching its navy ship, ITS Libra, which was located only about an hour away from the scene.

DRC violated right to life of prominent human rights defender Pascal Kabungulu, UN Committee finds GENEVA (13 January 2021) – The UN Human Rights Committee has found the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) violated the right to life of Pascal Kabungulu who was killed in an extrajudicial execution, in front of his family. Kabungulu was a leading human rights defender committed to the fight against corruption and impunity in the DRC. A journalist by training, he served as Executive Secretary of Héritiers de la Justice, a well-known human rights group that had uncovered and documented human rights violations and war crimes in the country.
