Castletown memorial decision

The committee formed to establish a war memorial in Castletown agreed to go ahead with a design in the shape of a cross, despite objections locally.
The decision had been postponed following a public meeting at which disquiet at the design had been expressed.
On the motion of Dr Macgregor, a vote was held which was carried by 16 to three in favour of the cross.
Kilwinning couple receive message from Queen as they celebrate platinum wedding anniversary A KILWINNING couple who recently celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary have received a card of congratulations from the Queen. Hugh Elliott, 91, and Ellen McColm, 90, marked their 70th anniversary on January 5 having got married in 1951 at the United Free Church in Stevenston. However, due to coronavirus restrictions, there was no big party to mark the occasion, but they did get a telegram from the Queen. Mrs Elliott told the Herald: “I could not believe it when I received the card. “The postwoman came to the door and handed me this navy blue envelope and inside it was another envelope from the Queen.
