Tory leader tells unionists to boycott any SNP wildcat referendum

DOUGLAS Ross has stressed “an unofficial referendum should be boycotted” and has called on other unionist parties to snub any poll held without Westminster’s blessing. The Scottish Tory leader has pointed to comments from the SNP over the first vote on independence in 2014 which was labelled a “gold standard of referendums”. The SNP has set out plans to legislate for a second independence vote if there is a pro-majority following May’s Holyrood election if Boris Johnson refuses permission for a vote to take place. A referendum would be held and a battle would likely take place in the courts to determine whether the vote is legitimate.

Douglas Ross: Scots must boycott indyref2 if held without UK consent

DOUGLAS Ross has called for Scots to boycott a second independence referendum if it is run without Boris Johnson s agreement. The Scottish Conservative leader made his views clear after he was asked whether pro-UK voters should run a campaign urging supporters of the Union not to vote. I would absolutely boycott that, he said. We were told the 2014 referendum was a gold standard of referendums. Nicola Sturgeon accepted that. If that was the gold standard then no-one – not just those who believes in the Union – but those who believe in democracy should enter into this wildcat referendums which would have no actual bearing, in terms of the outcome not being enforceable.

Union under pressure as polls suggest most people want votes on Scottish independence and united Ireland

Collision course: Sturgeon ups ante and points to Scottish Govt staging its own Indyref2 if Johnson keeps saying no THE Union of the United Kingdom is today facing mounting pressure on two fronts as opinion polls suggest that a majority of people in Scotland and Northern Ireland now want referendums on their membership of it within the next five years. The snapshots, commissioned by The Sunday Times, come as the SNP has set itself on a constitutional collision course with the UK Government, announcing that if, as expected, it gets a majority in May’s Scottish parliamentary elections, then, once the pandemic is over, it will stage its own “legal referendum” and dare Boris Johnson to challenge it in court.
