ICE Appointed To Host UK Emissions Auctions For The UK Emissions Trading Scheme Date

Intercontinental Exchange, Inc. (NYSE:ICE), a leading operator of global exchanges and clearing houses and provider of mortgage technology, data and listings services, announces that ICE has been appointed to host emissions auctions on behalf of the UK Government’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).
As announced on December 14, 2020, the UK Government and Devolved Administrations will launch a UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UK ETS) from January 1, 2021, to replace the UK’s participation in the EU ETS.
Further details on the auction calendar and the spot and futures contracts ICE intends to launch in connection with the new UK ETS will be announced in due course. ICE plans to commence auctions and launch the related futures contracts as soon as feasible and no later than the second quarter of 2021, subject to regulatory approval.

Georgia Elliot-Smith, who now lives in Enfield in North London, has won permission to challenge the four governments of the UK over the exclusion of waste incinerators from the post-Brexit emissions trading scheme. The former Weaverham High pupil, now a waste industry expert and environmental consultant, has been granted permission for judicial review of the government’s decision to omit municipal waste incinerators from the scheme that will replace the EU emissions trading scheme from January. She will also challenge the cap on the volume of emissions permitted under the emissions trading scheme.
UK Government in Talks to Fund £20bn Nuclear Plant Sizewell C
The UK government has confirmed it is to negotiate with French power producer EDF about developing the proposed Sizewell C nuclear power plant in Suffolk.
The government is looking at options to enable investment in at least one nuclear power station by 2024, and is considering funding Sizewell C, a twin-reactor plant that could generate 3.2 gigawatts of electricity, 7 percent of Britain’s energy needs.
Negotiations will be subject to reaching a “value for money deal” as well as thorough scrutiny, and will need to satisfy the government’s robust legal, regulatory, and national security requirements, the Department of Energy said in a statement.
