Farmers slam Blue Peter for encouraging children to stop eating meat

Farmers and parents have slammed Blue Peter for encouraging children to stop eating meat after the TV show urged viewers to go vegetarian for a climate change challenge.  The children s series is offering green badges - similar to the famous blue ones - to youngsters who are environmentally friendly as part of a two-week pledge. Sports teams can also apply for their whole group to become climate heroes by switching off lights and appliances when they leave the room, alongside drinking from reusable water bottles. They can further receive the badge by choosing a vegetarian option for a meal, with the BBC show listing plants as one of their supersized pledges .

Last modified on Tue 16 Mar 2021 02.02 EDT Elon Musk’s Tesla lobbied the UK government to raise taxes on petrol and diesel cars in order to fund bigger subsidies for electric vehicles, alongside a ban on hybrids. The proposals would theoretically add thousands of pounds to the cost of a new petrol or diesel car, while making electric cars cheaper.

How to establish, manage and rejuvenate hedgerows >More in © Nigel Adams Healthy hedges are a lifeline for wildlife, providing food and habitat, including for many of the birds within the Farmland Bird Index as well as for priority mammal species in the UK’s Biodiversity Action Plan. They also help with pollination and pest control, reduce flood risk, conserve soil and capture and store carbon, to the extent that the UK’s Committee on Climate Change suggested in a 2019 report that the hedgerow network should be extended by 40% as part of the UK’s 2050 net zero emissions target. Natural England went further, recently recommending increasing England’s hedge network by 60% to 882,000km (enough to circle the Earth roughly 22 times) to support thriving biodiversity.

Leeds Bradford Airport plans: University of Leeds backs GALBA plea

MORE than 200 staff and postgraduate researchers at the University of Leeds have asked a cabinet minister to  call in the decision on Leeds Bradford Airport. The airport’s planning application was given conditional approval by Leeds City Council on February 11 but campaigners say there should be Government-intervention as it threatens the UK s legally adopted net-zero target. Impact on the climate needs to be assessed The signatories, including 46 professors and associate professors, say that expanding LBA’s passenger numbers by 75 per cent exceeds the maximum rate of growth that the Climate Change Committee considers compatible with the UK’s legally adopted net-zero target.
