Global Warming: Future extreme weather predicted for Scotland as scientists warn of a chance of 1 5°C increase to world-wide temperature

Updated Thursday, 27th May 2021, 4:08 pm Dr Sarah Ivory, a lecturer in Climate change and business strategy at Edinburgh University said that if the global temperature increase does occur, then Scotland will definitely see ‘more extreme weather.’ She said: “In Scotland, we ll certainly see more extreme weather. World has 40% chance of temporarily reaching 1 5C threshold in next five years | Dumbarton and Vale of Leven Reporter

There is a 40% chance of the world temporarily hitting the 1.5C temperature rise threshold in one of the next five years, scientists have warned. A new climate update warns the odds of the world experiencing global annual temperatures that are 1.5C above pre-industrial levels in one of the next five years are increasing with time. The report published by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) also warns of a very high likelihood – a 90% chance – of at least one year between 2021 and 2025 becoming the warmest on record, outstripping 2016’s record heat. Global average temperatures of 1.5C above 19th century levels are seen as a threshold beyond which the most dangerous impacts of climate change will be felt.

Pic: AP The 2015 Paris climate accord set a goal of keeping temperature rises under that threshold to prevent the worst effects of global warming. Last year the UN World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) said there was a 20% chance of the threshold being breached. In its latest forecast, however, the organisation said the worsening of the odds is due to improvements in technology showing that the world had actually warmed more than we thought already .
