While the uranium spot price continues in a narrow trading band, Cameco places its North Saskatchewan operations on care and maintenance.
-Cameco suspends Cigar Lake operations
-Positive UK government nuclear initiatives
-Uranium spot price remains range-bound
By Mark Woodruff
Cameco, the world’s second largest uranium producer, suspended operations at its Cigar Lake Mine on December 14. This was after finding six positive covid cases in its North Saskatchewan operations.
In an official statement, the company noted a significant negative trend in Saskatchewan case numbers, which has contributed to uncertainty over the mine s operations. That uncertainty was attributed in part to a lack of access to qualified staff, due to a shrinking number of available workers resulting from self-isolation, absenteeism and pandemic-related disruptions to transportation.

IFC Moves to Assist Nigeria Address Food Waste, Health Sector, Energy Consumption Challenges
A member of the World Bank Group, International Finance Corporation (IFC) is bracing to help Nigeria address its food waste challenges, support the country’s health sector, and reduce its energy consumption.
IFC is however, the largest global development institution focused on the private sector in emerging markets. It works in more than 100 countries, using its capital, expertise, and influence to create markets and opportunities in developing countries.
In fiscal year 2020, IFC invested $22 billion in private companies and financial institutions in developing countries, leveraging the power of the private sector to end extreme poverty and boost shared prosperity.
Universities should be drivers of local sustainability
Universities should reinvigorate the civic role of institutions to build ecologically and socially resilient communities as part of their efforts to help lead the United Kingdom’s strategy for tackling climate change, according to a new report.
To do this, they should collaborate more locally, building alliances between scientists, artists, politics and society, particularly from marginalised communities, and become drivers of transition to sustainability in their local community.
In order to take that role, they must also lead by example in redesigning their day-to-day operations to reduce emissions, including from staff and student travel, nurture biodiversity and adapt to the impacts of a changing climate.

Protecting Covid-hit fishing communities in Peru
The University of St Andrews has been awarded a grant of nearly £300,00 to help protect the livelihoods of fishing communities in Peru hit by Covid-19.
Peru is one of the world’s worst Covid-19 impacted countries. High levels of labour informality drive the need for people to work, undermining disease containment. This is particularly acute in the fishing and seafood supply sector where there are limited economic alternatives.
This new research will help address the urgent need to understand the impacts of Covid-19 on fishing dependent communities and to develop strategies to reactivate the seafood supply chain whilst minimising further Covid-19 infections.

Two online net zero calculators have been launched to aid public understanding and engagement
MOST of us know about the UK commitment to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, enshrined in the Climate Change Act. And I’m sure most of us know some of the things that will help us on the decarbonisation journey, such as more renewable electricity generation, electric vehicles and so on. But what does net zero really mean? And how much effort will we have to make in each area of the energy system in order to reach net zero?
