Derek Chauvin conviction: Manitowoc racial justice leaders react

MANITOWOC - Nearly a year after local residents peacefully marched in the streets after George Floyd s death, local racial justice groups breathed a small sigh of relief to hear Floyd s killer was convicted of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter. Lakeshore s United Visionaries posted a statement on its Facebook page Tuesday that called former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin s conviction a moment of justice that many of us were nervous wasn t going to happen. This verdict sets a new precedent that means so many things to us, our community, and the United States, the statement said. It means a moment of relief, being heard, being acknowledged, and being believed. … It means possibility for police reform and accountability.
