A new report from the WHO Barcelona Office for Health Systems Financing has highlighted the need for governments to maintain a higher level of public spending on health for the wider benefit of society despite expected budgetary pressures following the pandemic.
The report, “Spending on health in Europe: entering a new era”, is the first in-depth analysis of health spending across all 53 Member States of the WHO European Region over nearly 2 decades.
In a foreword to the report, WHO Regional Director for Europe Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge and Director of WHO/Europe’s Division of Country Health Policies and Systems Dr Natasha Azzopardi-Muscat write: “To avoid the mistakes of the past, governments will need to invest more public funding in health now and in the years ahead – even as they face growing budgetary pressure – to address the backlog created by disruption to health services, mitigate the negative health effect

Leaving no one behind in health has taken on a greater sense of urgency during the COVID-19 pandemic. On a country visit coinciding with World Health Day, the WHO Regional Director for Europe, Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge, highlighted the importance of equity in health to decision-makers, while also meeting with patients and health-care workers delivering health care to people who find themselves in difficult circumstances.
Vaccination against COVID-19 is an important part of bringing the pandemic to an end. But key to the ongoing roll-out is ensuring that priority groups are vaccinated no matter their status or living conditions.

WHO/Europe and the Hellenic Republic of Greece today open a new sub-office in the country focusing on quality of care and patient safety. Acting as a centre of excellence, the sub-office will work towards achieving the highest level of well-being, health and health protection in the WHO European Region, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Speaking at its opening, WHO Regional Director for Europe Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge said, “Better quality of care relies on a strong primary health care system, where most preventive activities, diagnostics, consultations and treatments occur. Let us make no mistake – the quality of care encompasses all levels of a health system, hence the need to integrate quality policies across the board.”

On the occasion of Salt Awareness Week 2021, WHO/Europe shares the experience of Dr Joana Ferreira, who is helping her patients in Portugal find healthier alternatives for processed or traditional foods to reduce their salt intake.
Reducing salt in our diets is a vital step in reducing the risk of developing raised blood pressure; associated cardiovascular diseases such as stroke, heart failure and heart disease; and chronic kidney disease.
