Mount Gretna Governor Dick forest cutting continues to anger some

Walking up the calm, leaf-covered trails through the clean air, the average visitor of Mount Gretna s Governor Dick Park might think they had escaped the division and rancor that dominate this hyper-connected world. But the park is host to controversy as bitter as any you ll see online, mostly surrounding forest management efforts characterized by supporters as responsible stewardship and by opponents as damaging, profit-motivated timbering.  The latest round of cutting, which selectively removed 61 acres between December and April, has sparked outrage visible on Facebook and beyond. It s a debate going back more than 20 years: Does preserving the forest, and the legacy of the park s founder, mean taking a more hands-off approach to logging and development? Or does it require active management and profit from the sale of some trees, as is advocated by the board of directors of the trust that oversees the park?

Brigadier-general killed in ongoing Papua clash

An Indonesian brigadier-general was killed in an ongoing clash between security forces and a rebel group in restive Papua province, authorities said. The clashes started on April 8 in Indonesia’s easternmost Papua province after rebels set fire to three schools and shot to death a teacher in Beoga village in Puncak district. Another teacher was also killed a day later as rebels fired at a teachers’ housing complex and burned down the house of a tribal chief in Beoga. Police, military and intelligence forces joined Operation Nemangkawi to find the attackers, who authorities believe belong to the West Papua Liberation Army, the military wing of the Free Papua Organization.
