BATHINDA: Ahead of the Leaders’ Summit on Climate aiming to underscore the urgency of immediate and stronger climate action, a global petition will be delivered to Joe Biden administration and world leaders urging them to drastically increase emissions reduction in order to limit global warming to 1.5 degree Celsius.
They should do what science demands, to stop funding fossil fuels and to get serious about the transition to renewable energy, according to the petitioners.
An official said they’ve confirmed that all 40 world leaders Mr. Biden invited plan to participate in the summit. Those include leaders who aren’t necessarily friendly to the U.S., including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
A 50% reduction would be significantly more aggressive than former President Obama’s 2015 target to cut emissions by at least 26% below 2005 levels by 2025.
Sen. Ed Markey, Massachusetts Democrat, said that target is doable but that the U.S. should try to go even further.
“The United States must be an undeniable global leader in climate action in order to meet the scope and scale of the climate crisis,” Mr. Markey said.

OTTAWA Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is under pressure to step up his commitment to cutting greenhouse gas emissions in Canada within the next decade as he heads into a United States-hosted climate summit with global leaders.
The virtual two-day event starting tomorrow, which is Earth Day, is where the government says Trudeau plans to unveil new reduction targets for 2030.
The Liberal government has promised to release new targets ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference this fall, when Canada plans to discuss progress on the issue.
