US return to the Paris climate pact welcomed by world leaders

London The formal return of the United States to the Paris Agreement on climate change on Friday brings it in line with accelerating action nationally and internationally to ward off climate threats – and could spur more global ambition, analysts said. That may include India setting a net-zero emissions goal, to match similar mid-century targets now declared by many countries from the U.S. to China, Japan, and South Korea, Rachel Kyte, a leading climate and energy expert, told media this week. With Alok Sharma, Britain’s top official for the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), meeting India’s prime minister this week in Delhi, “now all eyes are on India,” said Ms. Kyte, who is dean of the Tufts University international affairs school.
