Gaza Expecting Surge in COVID Cases Due to Crowding While Sheltering From Bombs

As healthcare workers in Gaza cope with the aftermath of the Israel Defense Forces’ 11-day bombardment campaign, health officials on Saturday expressed fear that the effects of thousands of Palestinians crowding into shelters for safety from the airstrikes was becoming apparent as coronavirus cases appeared to surge in the besieged territory.

The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) Philippe Lazzarini is in Gaza for the first time after the latest Israeli aggression.
Mr. Lazzarini underscored the Agency’s commitment to the rights and wellbeing of Palestine refugees, who form over 70% of Gaza’s 2 million inhabitants.
“I am deeply frustrated at this senseless episode of extreme violence that killed civilians, destroyed infrastructure and threw Gaza back several years,” said Mr. Lazzarini. “19 of the 60 children killed in this conflict went to UNRWA schools, they were known to my colleagues.”
Mr. Lazzarini visited Shifa Hospital where he met Sarah, a five-year-old who was paralyzed by shrapnel that hit her during an airstrike on her building. A UN official in war-battered Gaza Sunday called for a “genuine political process” to avert further bloodshed after the military conflict between Israel and Islamist group Hamas that ravaged the Palestinian enclave.
As thousands of Gazans slowly tried to piece back together their lives, top UN staff visited the territory after an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire Friday halted 11 days of mutual bombardment.
