In the twentieth century, only four nominees to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States have been rejected; all were the nominees of a Republican president and three of the four were rejected by Democrats, who controlled the United States Senate. John J. Parker, was the first nominee to be rejected by the U. S. Senate in a span of 72 years. Parker was also the only one of four nominees to be rejected by a Senate controlled by his own political party. Parker’s nomination was the beginning of the modern conformation process for future nominees to serve on the U. S. Supreme Court.

President Donald Trump has once again taken aim at Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel on Twitter early Sunday morning and she was not having it.
Early on Dec. 27, Trump tweeted that he disapproved of Nessel’s move to sanction the GOP attorneys who pushed falsehoods in court while backing the president’s attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Trump said the lawyers who may be facing sanctions are “true patriots who are fighting for the truth” and that, instead, Nessel “should be sanctioned.”

Most of the legal decisions that establish new precedents or expansion of civil liberties are usually handed down by appellate judges and not by trial judges. The reasons for this are numerous:
1. Appellate judges are usually removed from the local notoriety of highly sensational cases. They normally hear cases at some distance from the actual trial. The hearings at which attorneys argue the merits of a conviction are usually poorly attended in contrast to the actual trial in the community where the alleged crime took place.
