New York High School Clay Target League having record spring season with 103 teams Updated 2:58 PM; Facebook Share New York State High School Clay Target League has a record number of teams and participants this spring. A total of 1,693 student athletes on 103 high school teams across the state are participating on teams for trap, skeet, 5-stand and sporting clays. The state league is part of the USA Clay Target League, a Minnesota-based group that offers high school and college programs in 34 states. New York’s previous record for number of teams participating was 88. Central New York high schools fielding teams this spring include Skaneateles, Moravia, Liverpool, Chittenango, Paul V. Moore Central School, Sandy Creek Central School, McGraw High School, Cortland Christian Academy, East Palmyra Central School, Altmar-Parish-Williamson, Waterloo, Romulus and Palmyra-Macedon. The New York Federal Reserve released a study this week that showed Americans are using most of the money for paying down debt and for savings, with a smaller portion going to actual spending. According to the report, households, on average, are using or plan to use about 41.6% of the latest relief payment toward savings, 33.7% toward debt and 24.7% for spending. The percentage for each category has stayed relatively stable for each of the three rounds of payments.   The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits rose last week to 744,000, signaling that many employers are still cutting jobs even as more people are vaccinated against COVID-19, consumers gain confidence and the government distributes aid throughout the economy. The Kids are in the Field: Young Hunters, Student Athletes hit Record Numbers Be it in the field or on the range, youth are taking to hunting and the shooting sports in record numbers as the foundations for tomorrow s gun owners are being created today.   The National Shooting Sports Foundation’s hunting license sales index showed a 29 percent jump in new hunters taking the field in 2020 when compared to the previous year, climbing from an estimated 2.3 million in 2019 to over 3.2 million, gaining a legion equivalent to the population of Jacksonville, Florida, or Austin, Texas. Many of these were teens.  As detailed by the Pew Trusts, Michigan saw a 67 percent hike in new hunting license buyers last year compared with 2019, including a 15 percent increase in female hunters and 46 percent more apprentice licenses.
