USFS extends campground closures in 12 forests in California

LOS ANGELES (CNS) The United States Forest Service has extended a developed campground closure at a dozen national forests in California, including the Angeles National Forest, it was announced on Thursday.
The closures will provide consistent COVID-19 mitigation response in accordance with Gov. Gavin Newsom s stay-at-home orders, a USFS statement said. These Regional Orders will be in effect through January 29.
The closed campgrounds are in California s Greater Sacramento, Southern and San Joaquin zones, and include Angeles NF, Cleveland NF, Eldorado NF, Inyo NF, Los Padres NF, Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, Plumas NF, San Bernardino NF, Sequoia NF, Sierra NF, Stanislaus NF and the Tahoe NF.

Sonora, CA The Stanislaus National Forest is one of twelve developed campgrounds included in the closure extension.
The United States Forest Service (USFS) cites that the shutdowns follow Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Stay-at-Home Orders to help protect against the spread of COVID-19. It will remain in effect through Jan. 29, 2021.
“This order extension will protect visitors and our employees by reducing exposure to COVID-19 and mitigating the further burden on limited healthcare facilities,” said Randy Moore, Regional Forester of the USDA Forest Service’s Pacific Southwest Region.

In 2017, Puerto Rico’s El Yunque National Forest experienced long-lasting damage from Hurricanes María and Irma. Around 30 percent of the island’s trees were damaged or destroyed, and Hurricane María was the strongest hurricane to make direct landfall on Puerto Rico since 1928. Due to the storm damage, the critically endangered Puerto Rican parrot suffered a 95 percent decline in population. In addition, the on-site greenhouse – an important resource for propagating seedlings to restore lost canopy cover – was demolished during the storm. Linde partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation to rebuild the greenhouse and begin the long-term restoration of El Yunque National Forest.
