California loses congressional seat for first time | CalMatters California loses House seat

In summary California loses one of 53 House seats after 2020 Census found the Golden State’s population growth slowing. Lea este artículo en español. For the first time in its 171-year history, California’s political voice is about to get a little quieter. After months of delay, the U.S. Census Bureau today released new population estimates for each state. The bad news for California: It loses a seat in Congress, down from 53 House districts to 52. The worse news: Not only does that mean the state will have one fewer representative in the House, it also means one fewer vote in the Electoral College that decides the presidency and proportionately less of the $1.5 trillion in federal money distributed by population each year.

Help Wanted Signs Everywhere In Eastern Iowa Indicate Big Problem

Help Wanted Signs Everywhere In Eastern Iowa Indicate Big Problem Where have all the workers gone? These days, it seems like you can t drive down a street with service-type businesses that you don t see Help Wanted signs in nearly every window. Those businesses aren t the only ones having trouble finding workers and it appears it s a problem that only one thing can truly fix. Last night, I drove an area of less than a half-mile on the northeast side of Cedar Rapids around Blairs Ferry and Edgewood Road. Nearly every business has signs advertising that workers are needed. (See the photos below) The one that really caught my eye was at Kwik Star where, as you can see above, they were offering a $500 sign-on bonus. A nearby Wendy s food restaurant is now open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and is closed on Sunday while a nearby tire store is now closed the last two Saturdays of each month.

Now, a new report from a major industry group suggests that these newcomers were also more likely to be female, non-white, and from urban areas than the existing outdoor recreation community. According to the Outdoor Industry Association’s New Outdoor Participant report for 2020, people who tried outdoor activities for the first time were about 9 percent more likely to be female and 7 percent more likely to be from an urban area. They were also slightly more racially and ethnically diverse, with 34 percent identifying as Black, Native, or people of color, compared to 29 percent of existing outdoor recreationists.
