Last week, as was wholly predictable, President Nicolás Maduro’s United Socialist Party of Venezuela and allied parties took 67 percent of seats in the National Assembly in an election not seen as legitimate by the Washington, the European Union, or many Latin American countries. Much of the opposition boycotted the poll, and Venezuela National Electoral Council President Indira Alfonzo said only 31 percent of about 20 million registered voters participated.
