Netanyahu s envoy Dermer departs US, but to Democrats he s been gone for years

181 shares NEW YORK In 2017, Israeli Ambassador to the US Ron Dermer gave a speech to a new organization formed to bolster Jewish support for the Democratic Party. Addressing the fledgling group, the envoy stressed the importance of initiatives that strengthen both Republicans’ and Democrats’ solidarity with the Jewish state, ensuring that the US-Israel relationship can remain a matter of bipartisan consensus. Dermer told the crowd he needed the support of both parties to effectively pilot the US-Israel relationship. “You cannot fly a plane with one wing,” he said. For over seven years as ambassador, Dermer, 49, helped steer the US-Israel relationship through the turbulence of Democratic President Barack Obama’s second term followed by the friendlier skies of Republican Donald Trump’s administration, when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu found a partner in Washington with whom he was politically aligned.

Nazi Germany s Lesser-Known Victims

Nazi Germany s Lesser-Known Victims Aside from the well-known Holocaust against the Jews, Gypsies, and Poles, the Nazis also persecuted Jehova’s Witnesses and homosexuals. Here s What You Need to Know: The vast majority of homosexuals persecuted by the Nazis included native Germans and acquired Austrians after the 1938 annexation. At 8 PM on the evening of Friday, July 13, 1934, German Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler stepped to the speaker’s lectern of the Reichstag in Berlin’s Kroll Opera House to explain his murderous conduct during the recent Nazi “Blood Purge” against the top leadership cadre of the brownshirted SA Stormtroopers during the weekend of June 30-July 2, 1934.

John Lewis was the model of black-Jewish relations we need right now

Editor’s note: In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Forward is resurfacing some of our recent coverage related to the Black-Jewish experience and racial justice. This article originally appeared in July, 2020. The death of Rep. John Lewis comes at a particularly fraught time for blacks and Jews in America. A series of nasty Twitter-fueled feuds have consumed both communities. Black celebrities from the worlds of sports and music have echoed the anti-Semitic ideas of Louis Farrakhan and the Black Hebrew movement. Jews have reacted with outrage and hurt. Blacks have either dug in or, in the cases of TV host Nick Cannon and former NBA star Stephen Jackson, listened to their more thoughtful critics and apologized.

This is a story about any society : New book details world of Terezín Ghetto

The Nazis operated Terezín (Theresienstadt in German) as a transit ghetto between late 1941 and May 1945. They first used the fortress town north of Prague to intern mainly Czech Jews, before the arrival of Jewish prisoners from other countries made its population far more heterogeneous. In her new book The Last Ghetto: The Everyday History of Theresienstadt Anna Hájková draws on extensive research to recreate the world of Terezín. Most notably the historian explores the ghetto’s social hierarchies, detailing how they relate to ethnicity and language, as well as influencing access to food and even arts events. I spoke to Dr. Hájková from her home in the UK.
