While a larger volume of energy coming from renewables such as wind is good news, the massive growth in energy demand from data centres and the simultaneous phasing out of old power plants may be more than our grid can manage

The tight supply last week meant that all available thermal electricity generators on the island were needed to meet demand, including Moneypoint’s three coal-powered generators.
All three coal-fired power generators have been employed at Moneypoint power station following an alert over tight electricity supply in Ireland early last week, just six months after two large power generators were switched off in the midlands, the Business Post can reveal.
An amber alert was issued by the Single Electricity Market Operator (Semo) last week indicating that a single event, such as a power outage at a generator, could give rise to power.

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) today (January 27) called on Minister Eamon Ryan to initiate an urgent review of national energy policy and to guarantee the continued operation of Edenderry Power Station, amid fears that a shortage of peat fuel could jeopardise the plant’s generation capacity and undermine Ireland’s energy security.
Following the recent decision by Bord na Móna to cease all peat harvesting, unions have expressed fears that insufficient stocks of peat could jeopardise the continued running of the Edenderry power plant and precipitate further job losses within Bord na Móna itself.
Ireland faces increased threats to energy supplies since Brexit Corrib field now the State’s sole domestic source of natural gas

Ireland faces increased threats to energy supplies as Brexit cuts our links with Europe’s gas and electricity networks, a report published on Friday warns.
The Irish Offshore Operators’ Association (IOOA), which represents licensed oil and gas explorers in the Republic’s waters, points out in its energy review 2021, that the Corrib field is now the State’s sole domestic source of natural gas, used to produce much of Ireland’s electricity.
The association notes that since its last r¼eport in 2016, “the risks of potential interruption to Ireland’s energy supply have increased significantly”.
