Dhaka Customs House and the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate have seized the smuggled gold repeatedly at the airports in the country. Some employees of the airlines have already confessed before the courts that they are involved in gold smuggling, sources concerned said. In the latest incident, Dhaka Customs House seized 7.290 kilograms of illegal gold worth nearly Tk 50 million from a US-Bangla flight which landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka from Mascut, the capital of Oman.

With them, a total of 1,369 passengers arrived at Sylhet from the UK in the month of December alone. A Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight with 205 passengers on board arrived at Osmani International Airport in Sylhet from Heathrow Airport in London on Thursday (Dec 31) morning. Doctors of the health department at the airport asked them to stay in home quarantine. It is learnt that the Biman’s flight with 237 passengers on board from the UK landed at Osmani Airport in Sylhet at 10:30am. Afterward, 205 passengers came out of the flight. Later, the aircraft left with the rest 32 passengers for Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at about 11:30am.

All of their test results were negative for the virus. After scrutiny, they were released with recommendation for respective home quarantine.

During hearing a suo muto (voluntary) rule, the court ordered the immigration department under the special branch (SB) of the police to submit the list to the court by February 28 next year. The HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Ahmed Sohel asked the head of the immigration department under the SB to submit the list after collecting information from the records of three international airports of the country Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram, and MAG Osmani International Airport in Sylhet.
