Epic Avoids Termination Hearing, Agrees To New Contract With Oklahoma State Board

By: Barry Mangold Oklahoma state regulators overseeing Epic One-on-One Charter School voted on Monday to approve a settlement agreement with the district and to cancel an upcoming termination hearing.  The vote ends a roughly seven-month-long saga between the district and its authorizer, the Statewide Virtual Charter School Board. The board threatened Epic with termination after a blistering report by the Oklahoma State Auditor & Inspector in October.  “Today’s vote moves us forward,” said SVCSB Chairman Dr. Robert Franklin after the vote to approve the settlement agreement. “It’s a clarion call to all Oklahoma public virtual charter schools that governance and oversight must be managed transparently.” 

Oklahoma Sues After $890K Worth Of Ventilators Never Arrived

Oklahoma’s attorney general has filed a lawsuit against a ventilator manufacturer, after it failed to deliver during the outset of the pandemic. Attorney General Mike Hunter’s office announced the lawsuit Tuesday. It alleges that A & K Distributors, a pharmaceutical company based in Puerto Rico with a presence in eastern Oklahoma, failed to deliver 40 ventilators to the state health department. The department made the order in April 2020, and paid the company nearly more than $890,000. The lawsuit alleges that by June, only two ventilators had been delivered. It states that, after some back and forth and more deliveries, Oklahoma health officials returned all ventilators and canceled the order. After that, officials demanded a refund, which the lawsuit states never came.

That s an increase of 21 from the day before.

Oklahoma virtual board member sues over Epic Charter Schools recusal

Oklahoman A member of the state agency overseeing virtual education is suing that same agency to overturn his disqualification from discussions and votes on Epic Charter Schools. Mathew Hamrick filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against the Oklahoma Statewide Virtual Charter School Board in Oklahoma County District Court. Hamrick, of Oklahoma City, is a member and former chairperson of the board. He is also the chief procurement officer for the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services. Current Chairperson Robert Franklin and members Barry Beauchamp and Brandon Tatum voted Dec. 8 to recuse Hamrick from all discussions and votes on any matter related to Epic One-on-One Charter School because of his connections with Epic co-founder David Chaney.
