Part of the Kingdom : Documentary sheds light on the experiences of LGBTQIA+ students at Christian universities —

December 30, 2020 A colorful spectrum of lights flashes across the screen as students emerge from the shadows with intimate defiance. This is their moment to share their truth.   “Part of the Kingdom,” a documentary directed by Makenna Cofer, a student at John Brown University, released on Dec. 17. The film takes a direct, yet personal, look at spiritual growth for college students in an environment that does not affirm LGBTQIA+ romantic relationships or marriages. Current and former JBU students and an alumna shared their struggles of seeking God, education and community during critical years of identity development.  “If I could talk to my younger self, I would want to tell her that I’m proud of her … You get a degree, you got to see the world, you got to travel, you get to live in a little house with a garden with some guy you love,” Jack Sloan, an alumna who graduated in 2019, says in the film. “You’re also going to tell your mom that you’re bi, and I know

An Olympian For Life

An Olympian For Life December 27, 2020 Expand For swimmer Anthony (AJ) Barbar, being part of the Olympics in 2016 was a dream come true.  However, his swimming career is far from over and the Boca Raton resident will soon have another claim to fame: he’ll be part of the 2021 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo. The 28-year-old, who swims on the Lebanese national team (he became a dual Lebanese citizen in 2014), is busy training for his second Olympics. “I’m doing pretty much anything I can to stay active,” he says. “Lifting weights, swimming, playing golf, basketball.”  Barbar speaks modestly of his 2016 Olympic performance in the 50-meter freestyle. “I did alright, not my best time,” he says. “But I was so pumped just to be swimming there.” He uses that performance as a learning lesson for his current training, saying “I’m just focusing more on the strength training. Being more explosive off the block and in the wate

Christian ethicists make the case for getting COVID-19 vaccine

Dealing with the issue of safety and efficacy, Matthew Arbo, C. Ben Mitchell and Andrew T. Walker write that because the stakes are so high, “the scrutiny and oversight have never been more intense.”  Writing for the Public Discourse journal of the Witherspoon Institute, a conservative think tank in Princeton, New Jersey, the three authors quote Dan Barouch, a vaccine researcher at Harvard University: “Never before have there been vaccine trials that have been followed so closely from inception to onset to conduct.”
